If you have just purchased The Wire ZipperTM, congratulations! This device will not only help the environment by recycling, but will put money into your pocket. Instead of throwing away those handfuls of wire or junking a truckload of insulated wire, use The Wire ZipperTM and junk a load of #1 bright copper at about four to five times the $$$$. Remember that most of the insulated wire that is junked is burned to retrieve the copper. Do your part, save the environment and recycle.

  1. First and foremost, caution and common sense must always be used while using The Wire Zipper TM.
  2. The blade is sharp – be sure to wear gloves.
  3. Secure The Wire Zipper TM to your workbench or other solid platform. (Thru-bolts are recommended.)
  4. Once secured, decide which size wire you will be stripping and select the proper size insert. The Wire Zipper TM arrives with one insert already installed. (There are four nylon inserts included with Model #1 - there are seven aluminum inserts supplied with the Pro. They each have a different diameter hole at each end, with the exception of Pro large 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8". You must select the proper diameter insert that will fit that diameter wire.)
  5. To change the insert, loosen thumbscrew enough to lift out insert. Install insert with proper size diameter hole up with securing groove toward the front and tighten thumbscrew. Once this is done, you are ready to start using The Wire Zipper TM.

Make sure wire is free from obstructions, i.e. kinks, tape, nuts, connectors, etc.

Step 1: Unlatch handle. This will remove tension from the spring. (fig. 1)

Step 2: Slide clean end of wire through loop in back and through insert about one inch. (fig. 2)

Step 3: Pull down handle and latch. Make sure cutter is in the slot of the insert. (fig. 3)

Step 4: With a pair of pliers, grab the one inch of exposed wire and pull through The Wire Zipper TM. You only need the pliers to get the wire started. Once you pull enough wire through to grip with your hands, finish pulling the wire all the way through. Wear gloves. (fig. 4)

Step 5: Once the wire is out of The Wire Zipper TM, take the back end of the wire and peel apart the copper conductor out of the insulator. As you will see, the copper comes out of the insulator like a zipper. (fig. 5)

The Wire Zipper TM Model #1 will slit wire from 14-gauge solid to 6 gauge stranded. The Wire Zipper TM Pro will slit wire from 14-gauge solid to 6 gauge stranded wire with the addition of 3/8", 1/2" and 5/8". The Pro comes with aluminum inserts. All wire insulation is different and spring tension may need to be changed. This is done by adjusting the bolt in the nylon base block, which is found under the insert. The nylon block (not to be confused with the nylon insert) can be removed by first removing the insert. You can then remove the nylon block with a small magnet or piece of wire and make the necessary adjustments. You can also adjust the nylon base block with a nut driver or socket. You will learn with experience just how much pressure is needed.
